Half the lots I dig into out in Westlake are cut into a hillside, and I mean cut hard — folks buy for the view over the Hill Country, then realize the walk from the back door to the yard needs a goat’s footing more than a homeowner’s. My name’s Dale, and I’ve spent the better part of 18 years building stone steps, retaining walls, and terraces around Westlake, Bee Cave, and the west side of Austin. Terracing is how you fix a lot like that.
Last fall I built a run of limestone steps and two terrace walls for a couple off Bee Cave Road, turning a useless 20-degree slope into three usable levels with a garden and a fire pit. Done right, terracing makes a steep lot livable and looks like the hill was always meant to sit that way. Done wrong, it slides downhill the first wet spring. Here’s how I think a job like that through.
Why a straight run of stairs doesn’t fix a hillside
A single long stair down a steep slope is uncomfortable to walk and does nothing to hold the soil. Terracing breaks the hillside into a series of flat levels held by retaining walls, with steps connecting them. Each terrace catches and slows water instead of letting it sheet down and erode everything below it. On the thin, rocky soil sitting over limestone bedrock we have around Westlake, controlling that runoff is half the battle — it’s erosion control and hillside landscaping as much as it is stonework. The flat levels also hand you room for a patio, a bed, a lawn — something you can actually use instead of a slope you just look at.
The steeper and taller the slope, the more terracing earns its keep. Two or three shorter walls almost always outperform one tall one, both structurally and in how the yard feels to stand in.
What stone actually holds up on a Central Texas slope
For steps I lean on thick limestone slabs — what we call chopped or sawn stone treads — because the local limestone is quarried right here, handles our heat, and matches the Hill Country look everybody’s chasing. Solid stone treads set on a compacted base give you a step that won’t shift under you.
For the terrace walls themselves, I’ll build dry-stacked limestone for a natural look, mortared stone for something more formal, or segmental block faced with stone veneer when the budget’s tighter. Dry-stack drains beautifully but takes real skill to build stable; mortared walls are more rigid but need drainage built in behind them or they eventually push themselves over.

Rise, tread, and where I put the landings
Comfortable outdoor steps follow the same logic as indoor ones, just a little more relaxed:
- Rise: about 5 to 7 inches per step, kept identical through the whole run
- Tread depth: 12 to 18 inches
- Landings: worked in every so often on a long descent, both to break up the walk and give you a place to stand and take in the view
Uneven risers are how people trip, so every rise in a run has to match. The City of Austin and surrounding jurisdictions carry building code requirements for stairs and for retaining walls above a certain height — you can check permit thresholds through Austin’s Development Services Department before you dig, since walls over four feet often need an engineered design and a permit.
Base prep is where these jobs go wrong
Steps set on loose dirt heave and separate within a season or two. I excavate down, compact a crushed-stone base, and set each tread level front to back with a hair of pitch so it sheds water instead of holding it. On bedrock, which we hit constantly around Westlake, I’ll sometimes pin steps straight to the rock for a foundation you couldn’t move with a truck.
What terracing a Westlake lot runs
Terracing a sloped yard is real earthwork, so budget for it accordingly:

Segmental block runs less than mortared stone per face foot; hand-fit dry-stacked limestone runs more, since it’s slower to build. Hillside access is often the real cost driver on top of all that — you can’t always get a machine down to where the work is, so a lot of it gets done by hand. It’s not cheap, but it turns a dead slope into square footage you’ll actually stand on.

How steep a slope can you terrace, or is a spot repair enough? Just about any grade can be terraced — that’s the point. A minor erosion spot or a short awkward stretch might only need a single retaining wall, but a genuinely steep or tall slope is better served by two or three shorter terrace walls than one tall one, both structurally and in how the yard feels to use. Very steep or tall walls move into engineered territory. Dry-stacked or mortared stone for terrace walls? Dry-stacked drains naturally and flexes with ground movement, which suits our clay-over-limestone soil, but it takes a skilled hand to build stable. Mortared walls look more formal and are more rigid, but they need drainage built in behind them or water pressure will eventually push them out of plumb.
