- Low-pressure rinse only if needed. If you use a washer at all, keep it under 400 to 800 PSI, with a wide fan tip held a foot or more off the wall. That’s closer to a garden hose than a paint stripper.
- Mild, pH-neutral masonry detergent. Lifts urban soot and pollution film without attacking lime mortar.
Work top to bottom, keep the wall wet ahead of and behind your cleaning so streaks don’t set, and always test a hidden patch first. Hiring this out on a full facade runs roughly $2 to $6 per square foot — more for detailed historic masonry work.
When plain water isn’t enough
Some stains — heavy carbon crust, paint overspray, biological growth — need a chemical, and this is where people get into trouble. Muriatic acid, the hardware-store default, is far too aggressive for soft historic brick and lime mortar. It burns joints, draws salts to the surface, and leaves a yellow-green stain that’s hard to undo. If a specialty cleaner is genuinely needed, pick one formulated for historic brick, pre-wet the wall so the chemical can’t wick deep into dry joints, and rinse thoroughly afterward. For green algae or moss on a shaded north wall, a diluted, brick-safe cleaner does far more good than scrubbing ever will. The mortar mistake I see most often
