Why you can’t just pour whatever you want out there

Because the apron lives in the right-of-way, it usually needs a permit and has to match the city’s standard details, unlike the private part of your driveway where you’ve got more freedom. Round Rock, like most Central Texas cities, sets specs for apron width, thickness, and how it connects to the curb, and inspectors do check. I always tell clients to pull the requirements through the City of Round Rock transportation department before anyone breaks ground, because a poured apron that misses spec can get flagged and torn back out. Curbing: the piece your apron has to tie into

Curbing is the raised edge running along a street, driveway, or planting bed. Along the road it channels stormwater to the inlets and keeps cars on the pavement. We excavate to the right depth, then lay and compact a base of crushed stone so the slab has uniform support and won’t rock or crack when a loaded truck rolls over it. Aprons carry more weight than a plain sidewalk, so they’re poured thicker — typically 6 inches of concrete, often with rebar or wire mesh for reinforcement, versus the 4 inches you’d use on a walkway. We form the flare, set the grade so water runs to the curb instead of toward your garage, pour, finish, and cut control joints so any cracking happens where we want it, in a straight line, not spider-webbed across the surface.

Curing matters more here than people think. Concrete gains strength over weeks, not hours, and in Texas heat we keep it moist so it doesn’t flash-cure and crack on us. I tell clients to stay off a fresh apron for a good week before driving on it, longer if the weather’s cool.

What an apron or a stretch of curb runs around here

Numbers vary with size, demo and haul-off, and whether a section of curb needs rebuilding, but here’s the range I quote most often in the Round Rock area:
